ISPM 15 Heat-Treated Wooden Pallets for Export

Any export shipment that uses wooden pallets or crates must use wood treated to the international ISPM 15 standard, or it may be rejected or delayed at the destination port. New Pallet provides heat treatment (HT) for wooden pallets and crates for international shipping.

What is ISPM 15?

ISPM 15 is an international standard from the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) that prevents pests spreading through wood packaging such as pallets, crates and dunnage. It is applied by most countries, including the EU, the USA, China and the Gulf states.

What is heat treatment (HT)?

Heat treatment raises the wood core temperature to at least 56 °C for 30 continuous minutes, killing insects and larvae. It is the chemical-free alternative to methyl bromide (MB) fumigation, which many countries restrict or ban.

The ISPM 15 mark

The wood must be debarked. In Egypt the competent authority is the Central Administration of Plant Quarantine, Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation. Engineered wood such as plywood, MDF and OSB is exempt.

FAQ

Do wooden crates need ISPM 15 treatment?

Yes. ISPM 15 covers all solid-wood packaging: pallets, crates and dunnage.

Can used pallets be exported?

Only if they carry an intact ISPM 15 mark and were not repaired with untreated wood. New heat-treated pallets are the safer choice.

What happens if pallets are not treated?

Destination authorities may reject the shipment or require re-treatment or destruction of the wood at the exporter’s cost.
